This pattern holds true at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) like Iowa State University, where discussions of racial and ethnic diversity in Iowa State's history typically focus on Jack Trice and George Washington Carver. Individuals of color at predominantly white institutions face a multitude of obstacles at predominantly white institutions, including Iowa State University. These obstacles include feelings of isolation, a lack of mentorship, devaluing of minority-centered research, among others. Communities of color (such as organizations and culture centers) provide spaces for students, faculty, and staff of color to build relationships, network, gain mentors, and provide an outlet for race-based frustrations. These communities are central to improving the quality of life for many racial and ethnic minorities at PWIs. I'm an interviewer for the Iowa State University special collections and university archives oral history project entitled voices in color. Today is February the 8th. It is Friday and it's about 12 14 in the afternoon. I am interviewing Selena said I study people being thought OK in the Special Collections classroom on the fourth floor of Parks Library Selena's name is spelled s e l e and a c a r a i p i n t o r is that right. Yes. OK so you want to tell me a little bit about yourself. Well yeah. Where are you from. Some like you mentioned my name is Selena said I thought I am from Des Moines Iowa. So not too far from Ames. I'm an apparel design major here I guess you look at all minor and entrepreneurship. I come from a big family a family of seven. Yeah. OK so why did you choose to attend IAC for college. It's actually funny because I initially wanted to go out of state. I wanted to study fashion and this was the only school that kind of had a bigger program for that. So that's the main reason why I chose to come here. Okay cool. So like very broadly speaking like how would you say the campus climate is for you and for your your sisters and just sort of in general the greater Latin community here and I ask you I think there is a community but it's a very small and there in the past it has been a little tough for us as like the Latino community as a whole but I think we've gone through a lot of things here and we're fighting to be seen and to be heard here on campus. So it's been a. Kind of a struggle but we're getting there. Oh yeah sure. Yeah. You said you said you've kind of been through a lot of things. Can you expand on that at all. Yeah comfortable yeah. So like with the elections. Sure it was just hard during that time and then there has also been some incidents of like the posters for the white nationalist groups and all that stuff. It's been hard to hear. Just seeing like small incidents or hearing about those incidents on campus can make you feel very unwelcome and sort of like conscious of who's around you and you know sometimes it's like oh I'm the only person of color in this big lecture hall or always kind of having that in the back of your head can be a little hard. So are you. Or have you been involved with any other student groups or organizations on campus. Yeah. So currently I'm only involved in LTA but in the past I was a little over involved. I have done Latino student initiatives which is another organization here on campus and I served as a general member and then I also served as a co president and then I also did the fashion show for two semesters in the spring. I was a part of behind the scenes committee in my freshman year. I also was doing project dreams which is no longer here on campus but it was kind of like a mentoring program for middle school students. And then I've also mentored at the elementary school here in Ames so that's been something else I think that's I could think of. That's a lot yeah. Do you tend to enjoy being really busy or do you prefer to scale it back a bit and focus on your studies. At first I think because I wasn't involved in high school I wanted to involve myself as much as possible and I kind of took on too much on my plate. So recently I took a step back and now I'm more so focusing on my studies. Graduation is coming up so I need to make that a priority. But it's it's been a rewarding experience and I've gotten a lot from each of the organizations I've been involved in. That's awesome. Yeah yeah well I think we pretty covered which ones and for how long didn't we first come here. So how did you learn about Lambda Theta Alpha sold during our destination Iowa State. Me and my best friend who's also not my sister went to the event and we were walking around and they were actually tabling so we were just looking to see what was around and they actually spotted us and kind of like smiled. So we went up to their table and a lot of like the now older sisters alarm were the ones there at the time and they were very friendly. The connection was there they really wanted to get to know us personally. And yeah that's where I met them. Destiny Shea Iowa State destination I was there. Oh yeah. Well that's cool. And what year was that again you said your freshman yes or 20. Fall 2015 OK. Yeah. And the group was still pretty. Yeah I was pretty new. I think they had a little a year. Yeah. So I'm fairly new a small small number of members still but it was just the connection that caught my attention. OK. Did they have did they have a lot of people at that time or a small. I want to say at the event I know there was maybe five of them but I think as a child that's pretty yeah it was still a low number so it was not it was not big. OK. So you kind of answered like What first piqued your interest. Yes you know it's just seeing these people in person and they were really friendly. Yeah. What What piqued your interest in joining the organization. They were very lucky in that in a sense with the connection. So the first day of classes I had given my number to one of the sisters and she actually texted me throughout the day and she's like I hope it is going well like classes are going well and things like that. And I think that kind of kept me interested because she out of her busy day she took the time to text me who was a freshman she barely really knew me. So with joining like I kept going to the events and the meetings that they had and just seeing the connection they had with each other. It was like I wanted a home away from home. So it just it gave me something to do as well and I only really had like my best friend here and I wasn't very social or outgoing so it was nice to have already that group that I could go to just feel like I could be myself. OK sure. So when did you make the decision to join and why. So it was spring 2016 or I might have been before before like winter break. We knew that we had the opportunity to join that spring and I initially wasn't going to join because I wanted to wait for a friend to join with me but my best friend kept telling me like I should go for it. That you know I. I didn't I never knew what could happen next. MR What if I got too busy or something happened so I want to say it was before winter break of that fall of my freshman year that I said OK I'm ready. I want to do it. OK cool. So with aspects of the sorority. Have you been most involved in since you joined. I want to say leadership. I try to be as involved as I can be. I when I first joined I became secretary so I was on things like board and then the following year I was vice president. So as us also stayed on the exact board. I've always liked being a part of bigger decisions and kind of like leading and making sure everyone has their voices heard and I've also plans a few events throughout my time. Yeah it'd be like events in leadership mostly OK. Yeah. You described a couple different positions there. Which one. Which one was your favorite. Oh that's hard. I really enjoyed both. To be honest with you I initially wanted to become academic chair my first year but I had a sister who pushed me to be secretary and I learned a lot and I think with both positions I've been able to improve each position as as the year goes. I had a lot of task and made sure I could help the vice president or president whatever position I had. So I really enjoyed both. I don't think I have a favorite. What are some ways that you feel you improved positions for the secretary. We implemented a timeline of events procedure so I would check in with sisters who were coordinating events and make sure they have. We're following a timeline. We had made to make sure planning was going right. I also made sure that the minutes were up. It was that was a part of the job so I didn't really improve it but making sure that that was done on time. I don't I think also I was really helpful to the president at the time. I made sure that if she needed notes to be taken I was taking them or if she needed something sent out I was sending it. So I think mostly they're in for vice president. Initially they were just like the right hand of President obviously but I included it. I included planning sisterhood events and then I was making sure that I was just overseeing the chairs that I needed to so making a document to kind of follow up with them. And I think that's what I improved in both positions. That's a lot. You mentioned that you planned several events. Did you have a favorite. There would probably be our annual banquet. It was two years ago that I planned it and I'm actually planning again this year. But two years ago was my first time and it was a really good turnout. We had a lot of families turn up and we had a lot of content that was useful. A lot of the families gave good feedback of the event. So that was probably my favorite just to be able to see at the end like how rewarding it was what would you say you're sort of in general is your most memorable story from your time. That's hard. I have a lot I don't think I have like a most memorable one just from the beginning and it's own being able to join and learn more about the story and be with my line sisters all the time because now we don't really see each other very often. And it's actually our last semester being together so it was just nice to kind of be all together. Even to the point of being an APM and welcoming my neo soul helping three ladies join the sorority it's all just kind of in between the top and it's been good. So yeah. So I know you mentioned your line. Are you guys allowed to say which which line that. Yeah. Some are part of line two and we crossed spring 6th 2016. Yeah there's seven of us. I'm number two. Yeah. What would you say are some of the most positive or significant impacts that your involvement in in Lambda Theta Alpha has had on you personally and your college experience. I believe it was the foundation form more confidence in my leadership skills. It really gave me the boost that I needed to be more involved and do more things on campus. It was the reason why I became co president of another organization. So I think before joining I was very timid and shy and now I just kind of know I I'm not afraid to speak up or to get things done when they need to get done. So it has definitely given me that and I'm very very thankful. Good for you. What is your hope or advice for future LTA sisters. I guess you I hope that the chapter continues to grow and I hope that it has become the home for them that it is for me. Advice Don't quit. Keep fighting. It's gonna get hard. But at the end of the day like you chose LTE for reasons is there anything else you want to add. Or any questions that I didn't ask you that you want to talk about. I don't think so.
