Your teacher is Betty Lou McVay of the WOI TV staff.\r\n\r\n\u003cv BETTY LOU MCVAY\u003eHere are two girls on a trip to the library. This is a portion of the library devoted to books for children. How many times have you gone to your local library? How many times have you visited your school library? Those of you who have many, many books in your school. How many things have you tried to learn from all of the new and wonderful books that you found in the library? Oh, so many things. Try to count them and the number goes away. Too many things. So many things. Subjects you'll learn about as you grow, as you go on in schooL, and as you study more and more and more, knowing that if you started now and read a book a day, every day of your life, you still couldn't read even a small portion of all the books in the library. Libraries are fun. Libraries, oh, well, sometimes you may go there to hear stories or to see puppet shows. True. Sometimes you may go to see pictures that are displayed there. But in the main, when you take a trip to the library, you go to learn, to get a book that will help you learn. \r\n\r\nBooks, books, books. More books now in the world than ever before in the whole history of the world. Do you remember that last week when we were talking with Marshall Townsend from the Iowa State University Press? He said that every day last year, 60 new books were published, 60 new books every day. And that was just in the United States. Oh, so many things to learn. Something else I must mention right now about last week, we talked about a new book that's going to be published this spring by the Iowa State University Press. And if you remember, Mr. Townsend brought all of the materials that will be used in the book, and this is the sort of cover it will have. It's a book about a very famous Iowa artist, Christian Petersen. And do you remember that? Mr. Townsend said, now you pretend, Betty Lou, that you wrote the book, and this is the sort of procedure you'd follow when we went to publish the book? \r\n\r\nWell, we didn't really mention who did write the book. Geraldine Wilson is the name of the young lady who wrote the book, and Mr. Lou Facto is the gentleman who took the pictures for the book. And I thought it was only fair that we mention and restate the fact that I didn't write the book, that I was pretending that I wrote it so that he could tell me how someone gets a book published. But I do think it's too bad. Not to mention that this book, which will be published this spring, was written by Geraldine Wilson. And and the pictures were taken by Lou Facto. And this is a book that I hope that possibly will be found on your stack of books in your library. \r\n\r\nWell, back to a trip to the library. A home for books. Millions and millions of books kept in libraries throughout the world. But libraries, you know, are really quite new. Oh, libraries of the kind we know. Because having equipment and machinery to publish and print lots and lots and lots of copies of a book, this is just, it's just been in the last few hundred years that this has been possible. And so libraries have grown and grown and grown. I'd like to take you through a very large library. Maybe the library in your town is fairly small, although it still holds more books than you'll probably read during your whole lifetime. \r\n\r\nBut I'd like to have you visit a library here on the Iowa State University campus. This is a library where your brothers and sisters study if they come to school here. Where you may study someday, where maybe your parents studied when they were in school here. I'd like to have you go with me and see how the library is used, what it looks like. And a beautiful building it is. This is the new entrance that's just been added to the Iowa State University Library. The library had to be made larger because more and more and more books are being made a part of the library. As more and more students come to learn here at the university. \r\n\r\nThe entrance room is very bright, with lots and lots of windows, and it's a pleasant place for the students to sit and read when they come to the library. It's very large now, and if you were to count all of the books in the library, you'd find that there are over 1,500,000 books in this library. 1,500,000 books. Many, many of them. And there are many people who work to keep these books in place and keep them from getting lost, and to check them out to the students who need them to study for different courses. Someone who studies about books and handling them and working in a library is called a librarian. \r\n\r\nHere at Iowa State, however, there are many students who are paid to help the major librarians. To help them with checking out the books and putting them away on the shelves. And as you can see, some students take out lots and lots of books. And some of the books are very, very large. Books on many subjects. On art, on animals, on farms, on space, on keeping house. Books. Stacks and stacks and piles and piles of books. Carts to carry the books from place to place, and to help the librarians helpers put them away in just the right spot. So that the next time a student who comes to get a particular book can find it in just the right place. \r\n\r\nLibraries, libraries. A building where books are kept. Now, it would be a little bit hard for all of you in all of your classrooms to take a tour of the Iowa State University Library, when you saw just a little bit of it. I'd like to have you take a more thorough trip, because there are some things to be found in this library that I think might surprise you. Things that you'd find interesting. And if you're in Ames sometime, possibly you'll stop in and see our library. Possibly if you're in Chicago or New York or Washington, D.C., you'll go to one of the very, very large libraries there. You've seen the children's reading rooms in your own libraries, but now these are rooms where thousands and thousands and thousands of books are kept for the students who are here at Iowa State University learning. \r\n\r\nAll right. Let's follow two of these students as they take a trip to the library. And as you take one, two. This is another entrance to our library, and these two students have come to get various materials that they will need for one of the classes that they're taking. I don't know, maybe they're students who are majoring in agriculture who will learn the latest information about farming. Maybe they're students in engineering, maybe they're learning to build bridges. Maybe they're learning to build buildings. Maybe they're learning all about atoms. Let's follow them as they go inside the library here on the campus. Thousands and thousands of students enter these doors every year. Some of them enter the library almost every day. And when they do, they see a display in the corridor that tells them about all of the things that are going on here on the campus. Sometimes it's a notice about a meeting that a club is going to have. Sometimes it says that if a student needs a room, this is where he can get it. All sorts of information for the students walking through. \r\n\r\nSometimes pictures are displayed. Sometimes newspapers or pages from magazines are part of the bulletin board display that these students will see. Notices, many things of interest to the students here at the college. Things you'd be interested in too. For example, study in Europe. And many of the students, possibly, who finish their studies here will go to other countries to learn more and more. Now these two students are going into the periodical room. Now, periodicals are magazines and papers and bulletins that come out periodically every week, every month, or every year. All of the, there are newspapers from every town in Iowa that publishes a newspaper, so that the students who come here from your hometown can read your hometown newspaper. Also, there are newspapers here for the foreign students, the students that come from other countries, from India, from England, from Japan. These students who come here to study want to read newspapers from their countries too. \r\n\r\nAnd so many of them are carried here in the periodical room. There are magazines here on every subject. Everything from dog care to the latest happenings in the world of outer space. There are popular magazines, many magazines that you probably have in your own home. Life. Time. They're all here and all a part of the university library. Most of the students who come to the periodical room don't take the magazines out with them, but use them here in this room. There are many tables and chairs provided so that the students can look at the magazine, take notes, instead of taking the magazine out. And then the magazine will be there for the next student who needs it. Here are some of the Iowa newspapers. Some of these newspapers come out every day. Some of them are newspapers that appear just once a week, but however often they come, they can be found here in the periodical library. \r\n\r\nThere are also newspapers from all of the major cities in the United States. Not just the Ames paper, but the Des Moines paper, the New York paper, papers, many papers from New York, Chicago papers, Los Angeles papers, Dallas papers. This is to help the student know what's going on, not only in all parts of our country, but in other parts of the world, because many of the newspapers from London and other countries are kept here. For the student who wants to find a certain article from a magazine, there are these are cards that help him locate the one particular issue that he needs. \r\n\r\nThis is the reserve room of the library. And these are books that are kept in the library. Books that can be found here. Usually the student doesn't get the book himself. He goes to one of the librarians, tells the librarian the book he needs, and the librarian brings him the book. He can sit here and read it, and then when he's finished, he returns it to the librarian. Because most of the books that the students will look for in this particular room are books that are needed by many students. Maybe there are 30 students in one class who all have to read from the same book. And so if one person took the book home overnight, that would mean that none of the other students could use it. So these books must be kept in the library. There are always people to help locate different books and different articles that have been written, so that the student, in some cases, finds his own books. In other cases he has help. Many times in parts of the library there will be displays of photographs and posters. These are always of interest to the students because they show many interesting things from many different parts of the world. Here are posters from foreign countries. Up the stairs and to another part of the library. There are many rooms in the library. And so far you really haven't seen very many books. \r\n\r\nThis is because many of the books are kept back in the stacks. Grant Wood helped design the painting that you just saw. And every student who comes into the library sees the murals designed by Grant Wood, another very famous Iowa artist. The horses? Well, the horses have many friends, students who've learned to love them through seeing them many, many times on visits to the library. And then there are display cases in the library where precious and rare objects are kept. Where important papers and important books are kept under glass so that the students can see them. They're kept under glass so that no harm can come to them. \r\n\r\nNotice the figure of the girl beside the staircase. She's one of the statues created by Christian Petersen, and she's rather looking over a whole list of little magazine articles. At the top of these stairs. Another mural by Grant Wood. The library is a very beautiful building. Lots of marble and open spaces and many, many lights so that the boys and girls who come here to read can do it without straining their eyes. \r\n\r\nAnd columns. Huge, heavy columns to hold the ceiling up. Here are some of the books that are available to the students. This is a desk where books may be checked out, and more tables and chairs for the students who may study. You can see that there are lots of people using the library. One girl using an unabridged dictionary, or a complete dictionary. Still, you haven't seen lots of the books, have you? But they are here, over a million and a half of them. And the student may have books on 5 or 6 different subjects that he wishes to check out during his trip to the library. Or they may be books that are not allowed to be taken out of the library, and so he will have to use them in the room. \r\n\r\nHere is a card telling the students how they go about checking out the books, about signing their name and address on the book card. This is rather the same way that you check out a book when you go to the library. You may have your own special library card with your own special number. Here the students are going behind the main desk back to the stacks. And here are stacks and stacks and stacks and stacks of books. Books. Hundreds and hundreds of them in each row. And you'd wonder how in the world a student could find one particular book when there are over a million and a half books in the library. Well, this is because of the way that books are numbered and lettered. And it's a very good system that's been developed over many, many, many years. And when you are older, you'll learn about the books that are listed from the 800 to the 900 numbers in the on the back of the book. If you've ever noticed a library book, you'll know that it has numbers and letters on it. This is the code that the librarian uses to help her keep the books in order. And then there are cards for each book in the library. Whole drawers and drawers and drawers of cards. And when a student wants to find a book himself, he goes to the proper card drawer, takes it out, and looks for it. I wonder if you realized that libraries were so large, and that being a librarian in charge of a library of this kind would be a very important job. \r\n\r\nMr. Robert Orr is director of our library here on the university campus, and there are many librarians and many students who assist him in his work, and his main job is making books available to students and teachers. It's a very big job, and a very important job, because someone has said that next to the teachers in a school, the books available through it's, the school's library are probably most important. Books that contain facts and figures and make up a part of the knowledge of the world we live in. Books that have been written by authors hundreds of years ago. Books that have written been written by authors one year ago, all a part of a modern library. \r\n\r\nAnd when you take a trip to the library, just look at the books on one shelf, try to count them, and realize that there are millions and millions and millions of books in the world. The Iowa State University Library is not one of the largest libraries in the world. It's a very fine library, but not one of the largest. There are libraries in the world that have as many as 11 million books. That's not counting magazines. That's books. \r\n\r\nSpeaking of books, as we have been, I think that any program dealing with a trip to the library, which is the one that you've just taken, would not be quite complete if we didn't look at some of the new books that are available for you in your classroom. And here are some of the books that have just been published. And I think that they're fun, and books that you would enjoy very much reading. I'd like to mention this book. It is called Playtime in Africa. It was written by Efua Sutherland and it's published by the Athenaeum Press. Let me show you a little bit about the book. There are many, many, many, many pictures, and the pictures and the written material, some of the, some of them poems, help tell you about the games that children play in Africa. Certainly to help you understand children from around the world. Oh, what more valuable aid could you find than the things that make children laugh and happy in other countries? This an excellent new book. Playtime in Africa. \r\n\r\nAnother one. We Like Bugs. We Like Bugs, written by Gladys Conklin and published by Holiday House. And this. Bugs. Drawings of bugs. Very good drawings of bugs. Information about bugs that you'll find right in your own front yard when summer comes. Interesting little things about bugs. How many of them do you know? Well, I do hope that you like them. And you will also like the book. We like bugs. We've talked before, when you visited the See and Do Time classroom about Ogden Nash, and you may remember his book called Custard the Dragon. Ogden Nash has published a new book for children. It's called The New Nutcracker Suite and Other Innocent Verses. And it is, of course, written by Ogden Nash, and it's published by Little, Brown and Company. And here with wonderfully wild drawings, poems about The Nutcracker. Do you remember the Nutcracker Suite? We usually think of it at Christmas time. Music, verse, and pictures. Ogden Nash. Would you like to hear just one little tiny poem about the new doll? All right. Now my new doll is so squishy soft, she dimples when I touch her. I love my old doll very much, but I love my new doll mucher. The wonderful verse by Ogden Nash called the New Nutcracker Suite and Other Innocent Verses. \r\n\r\nSpeaking of music, one of the most interesting new books, and I think you'll find that this is true, is a book called The Sorcerer's Apprentice. This is a book that is published by Little, Brown and Company. The drawings are wonderful, and it's an interesting way to learn about the music, the story, and the imagination involved in The Sorcerer's Apprentice. It's very famous music. And if you will notice, there are the notes that correspond with the sound of the music in a given part, and this helps you to understand what's going on when you hear different parts of music. Do you remember about the broom that brought the water and the music that helped you realize exactly how serious it was getting for The Sorcerer's Apprentice? The illustrations are very, very lovely and published by Little, Brown and Company, the Sorcerer's Apprentice. What other ones? A book of poetry called The Adams Book of Odd Creatures with A, B, C standing out. The verse and the pictures were by Joseph Lowe, and it is published by the Athenaeum Press. \r\n\r\nAnd let me show you some of the odd creatures. Well, let's see. How about the dodo bird? The dodo is poor passing thing. He will not last. He cannot sing. Part of odd creatures and all with the ABCs. Poems. Pictures. Fun. By Joseph Lowe, published by Athenaeum Press. These are just some of the new books that are available. So many new children's books and such fun ones. I hope some of you will have them in your own library at home. And you may not have bookcases filling every wall with hundreds and hundreds of books, but you should have special books that you particularly like yourself, and you should take good care of them and save them so that they will be the beginning part of your library. I think that these are the main books that I wanted to show to you. O\r\n\r\nne more. This is the last one called Arthur. It is by Rhoda Levine, and it too is published by the Athenaeum Press. And it is particularly interesting, I think, because of the illustrations in the book. Patterns. Oh, yes. Very interesting patterns. And Arthur. Who is Arthur? Is he a people? Is he a bird? Is he a dog? What is he? You get the book and find out for yourself. And if you don't have it in your school library, maybe your city library will have it. Arthur. Easy title to remember. Written by Rhoda Levine. Books for your library. Books for you. Books that are fun. I'd like to remind you about something. You remember that we are going to have our own art exhibit here in the See and Do Time classroom. \r\n\r\nAnd I'd like to remind you that now is the time to start sending us your pictures, or little statues that you've modeled, or cloth that you've decorated or material that you've woven. Whatever you've done as a special project, won't you send it to See and Do Time, WOI TV, Ames, Iowa?
