OK, you can start. Good afternoon, this is August 16th, 2007, and we are sitting here with Jean Krim Eels in Stratford, Iowa. This interview will be taking place and we'll be covering them, the farmland that I own, which has been inherited from my grandparents who came from Sweden. My name is Ruby Erixon. Hendriksen and I live in San Carlos, California, and I have lived there about 40 some years. I acquired this 80 acres of farmland, which is southwest of Stratford, Iowa, in Webster County, Hardin Township. And when my after my my parents passed away, they the basic crops are corn and soybeans, which is sharecropped by a neighbor who manages this. I am a non-participant farmer. That and. And this affects my my taxes so that I am fine, I file a forty eight thirty five property tax each year for this property as a non-participant landowner, how many how many years you had this? I have had this now since about since about 1980 when my mother passed away and then it became my property. Now she had managed to buy herself because your dad and she shared my mother sharecropped this also. Now by sharecropping, we mean that the farmer here in the local area provides the the manpower, the machine hire the you provide the crops, you harvest the crops, and then we're responsible for the taxes. And that's pretty much pretty much what our sharecropping situation is. You do you do half of the inputs, like half of the fertilizer, half of that. Yes. Yes. We we provide half of the cost of the fertilizer, the insecticides, any sprays that are there. And of course, we do the maintaining if we have any fences, that's our responsibility. And then we split them, split the profits down at the end of the year, which means you technically get then have half to half of the yield of the soybean acres or half the yield of the corn. Yes, yes, that's correct. Half of each of the. And we rotate that now. There has been a little change in my plans or my circumstance with this property. About four years ago, I signed up for the NRC has prairie wetland program and I was permitted to install prairie land in 40 acres. We have on the property about eight tenths of an acre of prairie remnant. There used to be many, many acres there when my mother owned the property. However, as the years have gone by, the farmers that have sharecropped it have take and taken and whittled away. So we're down to eight tenths. Unfortunately, that's all we have left. But that is right next to the new 40 acres of the narks property prairie. Now, the prairie at that four years ago, we always recommended that I take and remove all of the perforated tile and install non perforated tile. So there are about seven, six, seven ponds in there in order that the purpose of this this adventure was to filter out the chemicals which are seeping down into the water table. And hopefully this will be a contribution towards that. And then also, as we have just gone to the prairie and taken a drive here in August and there were is becoming more of a habitat for wildlife and birds. And apparently there is a deer with a phone there. And I know we have a badger. And so I will have to see what this venture brings. But that was the purpose to benefit the to eliminate as much chemicals going down into the water table as possible because of becoming a, as I see it, a very severe problem that our drinking water and our water table is being contaminated. Tell me a little bit more about how your mother came to protect that remnant of her remnant. Why did why did she do that? Well, my my grandfather acquired this property in 1874 when he came from Sweden. And they were very it was all prairie at that point in time. And he they open up more and more farmland and they over the years and they had they they rotated between the corn. And I'm not sure of soybeans was that probably I don't know what they did that maybe alfalfa oats. Oats I think. During those years and so the prairie was a very important thing in their life, and as the years they have cut back and cut back, what we had, I think about five acres, if not maybe a little bit more, that was they left it because of the of the novelty of it. And just because of that, that was important to them to have that prairie. Then when my grandparents passed away and my mother acquired it, this was she was a real fanatic on not a fanatic, actually. She was very devoted to plants and flowers and flora and fauna. So anything that bloomed, it was something that was of great importance to her. And that's how we acquired that prairie. It's just always been there. And the story. So you grew up on that place? No, no, I did not know. I grew up a one and a half miles west of Stratford on high place, right down Highway 175 on a farm. My parents my mother got married and then they moved there. But my grandparents have always, always lived there. Actually, I should sign up for the Centennial Farm because I've had it now. It's been in our family now since 1874. And that property well past. Yeah. Oh, I know. Yes. And then also what happened is this. If you remember back in the that time frame, there was something to do with the the property, the river land. Yeah. And I cannot remember right at this point in time, the Riverland name, but they acquired either every odd odd section or even numbered sections because they they claimed that they could the river was navigable to Fort Dodge and consequently they acquired this land. So my grandfather, after he had purchased this property, they came and told him that he owed like if he wanted this property, he would have to pay four hundred dollars in order to retain to keep this land because it was going to this river land company. And so he very reluctantly did that, but he was able to keep the land down. But and I cannot remember the name of the project. There are still some part. When you look at maps, you'll see that there are still some these parcels that are still out there under this river land name for the sake of the record. I think that's Litchfield. Litchfield. Yes, yes. Yes, yes. So you visited this your grandparents farm then as a kid, and were you aware of that prairie back there and at that time or not? Yes, I was. But when I was younger, when I was younger, I didn't have any interest in it. You know, it was just something that was there. And and I think there had been a couple graves out there, as a matter of fact, to but over the years, they have just deteriorated. And and how is it how you know, how they ever came there? Now, when my grandfather came here in 1874, they there was this little pioneer house that similar to what we have now in Stratford, like the Bergland Lynn house, it was just like that. And then they planted trees and barns and things like that. And then he was married and had two children, two little boys, and his wife died. And they're buried down in the Hardin Township cemetery. But then my grandmother came in 1898. He sent for her from Sweden. And I think her entire trip was like eighty nine dollars because I still have the ticket, a ticket for her ship fare and everything to come to be married and live there so that they have always lived there on that farm. And they it was a situation where we're just southwest of strapon. So they would walk across the fields with their eggs and sell things in town. And that was said to drive there. You have to go south from Stratford on Stagecoach Road and then down to three hundred and seventy eight Street. And and in order to get to the main lane after my parents, my parents moved to California in about nineteen sixty six. Sixty seven, and they removed the house and there was a cave and the old homestead there, so that's no longer available there. They ended, of course, with all the plants and flowers and the gardens. And they were self-sustaining, of course, just like my parents were on our farm where we were. We always had all the food that we consumed was usually raised right there on home, at the home. Now, we had the celebration of 4th of July, which constituted and still remains important in my my mind, not the fireworks, not all this, but my my parents and my grandparents always on 4th of July, they would have their home grown sweet corn, tomatoes, watermelon, strawberries, fried chicken. And that was our Fourth of July, that everything came from the garden. New potatoes. So you had the land since 1980 that you were after. Did I get that right? Yes, 19 in 1980. Yeah, my mother my mother died about seventy nine. And then so then I acquired it then. And so you were managing it all by yourself then all of a sudden. Yes, I just continued the sharecropping and we've always had sharecropping used to be another, another my mother. I continued with who she had Marvin and then when he retired then I, now I have John and with the same set up, I'm contemplating switching to alfalfa there because I would think it would be interesting to have just something that similar to the grasses. The prairie seems to be coming along quite well and it's 40 acres of prairie. And it might be interesting to have raised alfalfa, but I have to investigate that to see if I should switch away from that or not. Now, the Agriculture Department in Fort Dodge has recommended that I at least have nine rows of corn somewhere for the for the wildlife protection each year. And that just left there all winter on sight. Now, that has to be developed a little bit more to see if that's something that the sharecropper wants to do, do or not. You started making some pretty significant changes to what you had been doing and tell us how you decided to put in Prairie and what what was your. And you can talk about the future of what you'd like to see happen to it. Oh, yes. Well, the the prairie came about quite suddenly. I had this remnant and I was just trying to see how I can preserve that and to enlarge it. And through Gene's efforts to we had some schoolchildren out there that would scattered the prairie seeds to see if we could enlarge it. But then this program came up and it was recommended through someone here in the Stratford area that this Narcissus program is was in existence, that where you could provide you would be provided assistance if you converted your land to the prairie for the poor again, for the purpose of water filtering and and just general maintained maintenance of the land along those lines. And to try to restore a little bit of the prairie, because I feel genuinely that there are too much of these properties are being wiped out. You work real hard at managing your property from a distance. How how has the experience been of converting the land and doing that from a distance since you're California and worried about getting started and. Well, first of all, they need an extension office in Fort Dodge. In our case, office in Fort Dodge was very helpful. They they suggested we do change to the tiling and that had to be done before the was ever went into being. And then the Karl Kurtz from North from Ames provided or sold the sold me the seed and which came, which was a quality mix that was that they harvested from Prairie's from I don't know what the county is from north from Ames, but they provide the mix from there. And so consequently that was the I learned all of this and it is for the first couple of years, there was not much to do. However, now I have a very, very competent man who is WLOS there, and he knows quite a lot because we're trying to keep the weeds under control and keep that low around the entire edge of the prairie. Then the in the Agriculture Department in Fort Dodge recommended that we mow paths down through the the prairie in order to accommodate when we're going to burn. So you would not burn a whole section and then that would keep the fire contained within the little section as each year as you did. The burning the burning probably does not have to be done yet for I don't know how long that has to investigate that when you start doing that. But you cannot apparently burn the entire area in one fell swoop. You have to do little hunk's each year so that the wildlife is not destroyed. I remember when we burn your remnant the first time. Can you tell? Oh yes. Yes, I my eight tenths of an acre. I had never encountered wildlife or a burning of a prairie before. As so Jean Eel's was telling me we have to do this because it had been never been done. So here we are about this big long strip and the wind was blowing like crazy. And, you know, Jean went down and burned the north end back, burned the north end of this section of the strip. And then when we went to the south end, attended a match to it. It went off and it was burned in five minutes. It just flew. I've never seen anything like that in my life. But anyway, that within about four days, I have to say, within four days I came back out there and the little green shoots were coming back up already. And that was in, I think, April, early part of April, because and the there were crown sparrows out there and they were all hopping around. Were they in the the new shoot area and it would have come alive. It needs to be done again. And the control is hard to control those big weeds. And I can't remember the weeds that are there. But the more heat the Mr. Fred, I'll call him Fred is my my mower. He said that he's kind of watching it and trying to see what we can do to delineate that. Now, the only thing that we might be able to do is that perhaps in May of 2008, I can come out there and we go out and whether we itr and take him cut these when they're these particular weeds that are so invasive, when they're only maybe four or five, six inches high. And because Fred said that there are a lot of wild roses coming up and there were I guess there were corn flowers in the remnant. And I just don't remember when all is out there because oh the yellow. I can't remember the flowers out there, but they're there. That's great. Now, this is something that you don't see a lot of your neighbors doing. How do you feel about all of that? Well. It's kind of dismaying because here you have all these properties where perhaps they the farmers could be doing it. I guess they're benefitting themselves with with this water circumstance. I was reading the other day that the major water table down in Oklahoma and the area is becoming less and less. The area is becoming less and less. And what are they going to do when the main main water table in this earth is gone and there's going to have to do something about it? I don't know. The many of these farmers, they have potholes that they could easily have a prairie in there and they're benefiting by that by having a prairie in there. And and with the if the the Narcissus is as good as they have been for assisting in this project, I just feel like there there's missing there's the missing something. I'm not sure whether the project still in progress or not. And quite frankly, I don't know. But I'm certainly glad that that is what I'm doing right now with the Prairie. You could probably be making more money if you were corn and soybeans or not. No, no. At this point I can't. With the conversation you get for the analysis of you, I think when you consider the cost of the spray and the cost of the different things of fertilizers that you have to put on your your net profit at the end of the year is terrible. I don't know how the farmers do it. And I guess that's why many of them are working regular jobs in addition to these, because I know I literally one year came less than one hundred bucks after I had my crop and everything. And that was that was kind of the turning point. And I thought, why not do something you enjoy doing? And that you can see a little benefit out of the farm. Is that certainly a better bet on your goals and for the area, the land after you're gone? How are you? How do you want it to be? What do you want to have happen to? Well, that that is is a real good question and bothers me a lot because I want to see it continue. The plan I'm on as it is for 15 years and I'm seventy two years old and I want to see that continues. And the thing is, I would what would be wonderful if you could get like a prairie wetland learning center of some kind of a lodge there and have like a memorial park up there for two in memory of the Swedes that came here that didn't have to cope with the prairie and and got to learn, learn about the prairie. They are a learning center. And the museum would be something that would be, in my mind, would be an ideal situation. But I don't really know how to go about doing it at this point in time. I have visited a Prairie Wetland Learning Center up in Minnesota at Fergus Falls, and it's a wonderful they have like 200 acres in that prairie wetland. And it's a fantastic set up that they have there where people can go and walk out in the prairie. But we'll have to see what what can what research and we can figure out what we can do there. But I can't wait too long because you want to get the thing developed. I still enjoy it. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Can you tell me about whether your parents, if you even know whether your parents participated in any soil conservation programs or not, if it if it doesn't come to your mind, that's OK. No, I don't think they did. I don't think they did. Because when dad was here, he farmed all did all his farming himself. And then when they moved to California, they moved to California, basically because they couldn't cope with the winters and any longer. Plus, my dad, after having for so many years, he needed all new equipment and they were coming out with a new modern equipment. And it's going to cost masses of money in order to convert over. And he just didn't have enough land for that. And I think we have 80 acres. Maybe we didn't even. Eighty acres west of town and then this 80 acres of gravel, so that was wasn't possible to keep up and ready to retire anyway. So they moved out to California and then dad went to work for a potted plant nursery. So he was still in the agriculture area because he thought that was that was a fun thing to do. It's a great deal. So what happened to the land west of Stratford then? That they sold it? They sold it when they moved to California. Is the house where you grew up and still there now? Well, that's the the farm is a mile and a half west of Stratford on one seventy five, right where the road turns, goes south. And the the house I was born and raised in a little house, a pioneer house again, that looks just like the Berlin house. The people that purchased it from my parents removed that house and the house that they we lived in there, they moved from Stratford. They when I was in high school or maybe. Yeah, maybe in the eighth grade, about nineteen forty eight, they moved it literally from strapper. They bought it and moved it out there. And so we had a brand new house, brand new, old and interesting and we got electricity. Oh that's a special thing. That was town at the bathroom no more. And I'm going to ask a question that I've asked everybody. And if you don't have an answer to it, don't feel bad. Have you experienced any difficulty with anybody trying to take advantage of you or anything since you're a woman, you're from out of state or, you know, anybody that was. Well, that's a that's a hard question to answer because you don't really know who what they might be. But generally, I don't think so. However, you have to watch people who are going to handymen who are going to for example, I didn't have a problem getting the fence installed because someone came in and just didn't know how to install it. And so now I think you have to go through a professional business. Where is it? Just a handyman sometimes doesn't work, especially from a distance. I know that that can be good. Is there anything else you want to say about your farmland that I haven't asked? You know, but it's rather strange when you're standing out that strange, actually, but it's rather interesting. We're out there south west from Stratford. When I grew up here and I was in high school from nineteen forty nine to nineteen fifty three, and there were farms all over the area and now there are virtually no farms, no buildings, no nothing. And you all you see are these ghost farms. You drive down the road, you see all these ghost farms here. Oh I remember this, I remember that. And I drive over there and I'm standing out there where the homesite homestead was. And I have my back to Stratford and I cannot see one building. And it's as if I'm right back full circle to a prairie pioneer who stood out there thinking, hey, I think this is a little bit higher ground. Maybe I should should build here because it's very strange to to to see that. And I'm just I'm there by myself and there's no one there. That must be how they felt when they came back. So I think that's that's the most interesting thing. I think if you're from here, it's always in your blood. I enjoy coming back here. People say there's nothing to do there. Well, there really is quite a bit to do if you enjoy the nature and things of that sort. So I'm really pleased that I still have it that my parents didn't sell the property. It's a good deal. It's a good deal. Do you for the record, do you have siblings that you share any management with? No, I don't know. I don't know. I do not I can't think of anything else. So we need to ask.
