So I really liked the kind of structured flow of classrooms. Um.

22 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:03:13 --> 00:03:21
But every once in a while, um, I would be, like, caught off guard by something new that they were doing or, um.

23 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:03:21 --> 00:03:34
Just like a new way of teaching. I was very strict to, like, I can only learn 1 specific way. Uh, when I was younger.

24 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:03:34 --> 00:03:41
So that was a little difficult. I definitely struggled with like, math and reading. Um.

25 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:03:41 --> 00:03:48
Which is also, like, typical for a lot of people with autism. Um.

26 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:03:48 --> 00:03:58
But I did end up winning, um, Pi, memorizing contest when I was like, in middle school. So, um.

27 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:03:58 --> 00:04:06
I think that was like, the highlight of my middle school years, if I'm being honest. So, yeah.

28 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:04:06 --> 00:04:11
Described patterns could you explain that a little bit more to people that? I don't know like.

29 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:04:11 --> 00:04:16
Kind of patterns like.

30 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:04:16 --> 00:04:26
Shapes and colors and stuff so when I was like younger in elementary school, I caught on really fast.

31 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:04:26 --> 00:04:34
Compared to, like, other kids and then when we started going up into the harder stuff like reading, I was.

32 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:04:34 --> 00:04:43
Super behind on reading, Super behind on math, but then at 1 point, I.

33 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:04:43 --> 00:04:48
Started kind of making a little game in my head.

34 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:04:48 --> 00:04:54
Sorry oh, I'm just describing how I, um.

35 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:04:54 --> 00:05:05
It kind of made it through elementary and middle school. I started making a little game in my head where I would like, accumulate little points.

36 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:05:05 --> 00:05:16
And if I didn't, like, leave a day, without, like, a specific amount of points, then I wouldn't be able to like.

37 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:05:16 --> 00:05:21
I have something that I wanted that night.

38 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:05:21 --> 00:05:31
I was really trying to self discipline at the time, because at that time, no 1 knew that I was artistic. Um, so I was really trying to.

39 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:05:31 --> 00:05:35
Compensate to, like, make my parents proud um.

40 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:05:35 --> 00:05:43
So, I ended up using a lot of like like patterns and, like.

41 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:05:43 --> 00:06:03
Kind of I had a very strict little schedule that I followed every single day. Like, um, my mom and I had to wake up at, like, 5 in the morning so that she could go to work. So she would take me there to work with her. She worked at a daycare, so.

42 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:06:03 --> 00:06:10
Do you take me to work with her? Then I would get on the bus and then I would go through my scheduled classes, like very.

43 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:06:10 --> 00:06:18
Numerically very like, set with any of that ever changed. I would like.

44 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:06:18 --> 00:06:23
At the time, I didn't know I was going on verbal, but I couldn't like.

45 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:06:23 --> 00:06:27
Talk to other people.

46 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:06:27 --> 00:06:33
So that's kind of how my elementary in, like, early middle squares when.

47 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:06:33 --> 00:06:37
Stuff like that so you're.

48 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:06:37 --> 00:06:47
During your 3rd year at Iowa State, what are some accommodations you found, or any times where you struggled to find a combinations and courses.

49 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:06:47 --> 00:06:54
I feel like I always date is super good with accommodations. Um.

50 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:06:54 --> 00:07:14
When I got diagnosed with autism, I told them that I was diagnosed and they were like, okay, we'll get you these specific accommodations. You have like, a nice little meeting with them and they like, help work through your problems. And like, it's pretty much. The whole thing. Is like, what can we do.

51 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:07:14 --> 00:07:21
For you, which is really nice, because usually, it's like, what can I do too?

52 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:07:21 --> 00:07:24
Kind of succeed and.

53 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:07:24 --> 00:07:31
Like, be meet my peers where they're at, you know, but, um.

54 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:07:31 --> 00:07:51
What I would say it's more like, we know that you're struggling. We know that like, you're trying your hardest what can we do to help you succeed and I really like that about it. Um, 1 thing, though, I did break my ankle very recently and it's hard to get around. So I've been looking for accommodations for.

55 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:07:51 --> 00:07:56
But it doesn't seem to be that many.

56 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:07:56 --> 00:08:09
Sorry to hear about your ankle, have you found a sense of community? I would say or rather it is the Latino or the autism community and describe it if so, um.

57 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:08:09 --> 00:08:15
I feel like the Latino community is really.

58 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:08:15 --> 00:08:26
There's kind of an issue with being autistic, and also being a part of the Latino community. I know that I'm a little.

59 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:08:26 --> 00:08:34
Different, I'm not exactly what they like. Look for. When they look at like a Latino.

60 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:08:34 --> 00:08:40
Especially since it's harder for me to socialize with them. Um.

61 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:08:40 --> 00:08:49
I know it's just like, internalized bias, but it does genuinely like, actually hurt whenever I'm like.

62 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:08:49 --> 00:08:56
Left out of community events or things like that. Um, simply because like.

63 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:08:56 --> 00:09:00
It'll be too loud for me or lake. Um.

64 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:09:00 --> 00:09:05
This person actually thinks you're kind of weird so they don't want you there, you know.

65 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:09:05 --> 00:09:10
Um, so it's kind of a struggle, um.

66 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:09:10 --> 00:09:20
Going to let me know events and, like, finding a good community of Latinos here, but it's kind of a struggle in general.

67 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:09:20 --> 00:09:36
For a lot of autistic people to find good communities where they, like, feel like they can be themselves and stuff so it's a little more difficult. I know that. For sure. Um.

68 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:09:36 --> 00:09:46
In terms of like an autism community I only know 1 other autistic person here. Um, and she's a coworker of mine. Um.

69 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:09:46 --> 00:09:53
And autism in the workplace is very difficult to, um.

70 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:09:53 --> 00:09:59
Which especially like, on campus jobs, um.

71 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:09:59 --> 00:10:05
I tend to stay away from campus jobs that are like.

72 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:10:05 --> 00:10:11
Super busy and Super hectic because I get overwhelmed. Um.

73 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:10:11 --> 00:10:19
But there's also like, kind of office politics that you have to take into account of that. It, it's like.

74 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:10:19 --> 00:10:23
Yeah, I've seen like, a lot of people.

75 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:10:23 --> 00:10:30
Kind of talk bad about that Co worker and because I'm much higher masking than she is.

76 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:10:30 --> 00:10:33
So, it's just like.

77 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:10:33 --> 00:10:38
If I wasn't as high masking, would you be treating me the same way?

78 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:10:38 --> 00:10:42
You know yeah. Can you do.

79 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:10:42 --> 00:10:51
Describe asking a little bit more. I feel like it's a term that only a few understand and that we should maybe discuss a little bit further. Um.

80 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:10:51 --> 00:10:57
In my experience masking is pretty much trying to.

81 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:10:57 --> 00:11:11
Fit into social expectations and standards when you were kind of, don't know how, or understand how exactly. I know that. I do a lot of scripting.

82 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:11:11 --> 00:11:24
I do like things where I've watched other people interact, and I just like, act how they act. And that's kind of what I've been doing actually, since.

83 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:11:24 --> 00:11:28
Middle school, um.

84 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:11:28 --> 00:11:31
It started in middle school I feel, um.

85 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:11:31 --> 00:11:51
Where I didn't have very many friends, I was like, a weird kid, you know um, sorry, the lights went out. Um, I was a weird kid, you know um, so I would, like, watch what other people did and kind of mimic.

86 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:11:51 --> 00:12:04
Like, do what they did just so I could, like, make more friends and do more things like socially. I feel like masking also really helps with, like, social fatigue kind of.

87 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:12:04 --> 00:12:11
It's like, kind of holding yourself back from the world.

88 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:12:11 --> 00:12:15
You know.

89 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:12:15 --> 00:12:18
Um.

90 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:12:18 --> 00:12:35
Okay, sorry that was another question I had growing up what did you find? Helps you cope with your autism as well as how they helped you on your road to college? Like, specifically where there are certain barriers you feel like you had to cross the other people probably did it on your road diversity.

91 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:12:35 --> 00:12:39
I feel like.

92 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:12:39 --> 00:12:52
A lot of my issues were based around, like, sensory input. So when i1st, I remember my 1st, during orientation my 1st day and I was, um, it was.

93 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:12:52 --> 00:12:57
Kind of way too much for me.

94 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:12:57 --> 00:13:03
I remember like sitting in an auditorium and then they like.

95 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:03 --> 00:13:07
Some personally came up on stage and was like.

96 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:07 --> 00:13:10
And I was like, oh, my God please.

97 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:10 --> 00:13:15
Calm down a little bit, you know um.

98 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:15 --> 00:13:19
Which, at the time I was like very, um.

99 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:19 --> 00:13:25
Highly masking. I know I mask way less now. Um.

100 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:25 --> 00:13:30
So, at the time, I was just like, staring blankly the whole time at, like.

101 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:30 --> 00:13:35
The person that was talking, and I think I scared him a little bit honestly, but.

102 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:35 --> 00:13:50
Um, yeah, a lot of sensory input is like a really big barrier for me. I can't like, go to loud noise, like, places with, like, loud noises or flashing lights. So, a lot of like.

103 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:50 --> 00:13:53
Football games like.

104 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:13:53 --> 00:14:02
Stuff like that, it's kind of off limits for me. So are like, a lot of even birthday parties are difficult for me to go to. Um.

105 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:14:02 --> 00:14:08
I feel like the main thing academically we're lecture halls.

106 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:14:08 --> 00:14:23
Lecture halls were the worst like 150 people in 1 space all talking at the same time while like a man is like, in front of us talking at us. It was awful. Um.

107 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:14:23 --> 00:14:28
So, I always sat in the back next to the doors, or in the front next the doors.

108 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:14:28 --> 00:14:33
So that I can leave, like, as fast as possible, right?

109 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:14:33 --> 00:14:39
So, during coven and the rise of online classes.

110 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:14:39 --> 00:14:47
Did you, or why did you struggle with online learning with autism? Just due to the surplus number of screens at the time.

111 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:14:50 --> 00:15:01
I definitely struggled with, like, having to look at a screen for so long. Um, but I.

112 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:15:01 --> 00:15:05
I remember I was actually a lot happier.

113 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:15:05 --> 00:15:14
During colvard because I was kind of away from social situations for the most part I like.

114 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:15:14 --> 00:15:22
Had my little bundle of friends at that point. So I was like, talking to those people.

115 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:15:22 --> 00:15:27
So, I wasn't like completely isolated either. I had like.

116 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:15:27 --> 00:15:36
A buffer I feel between, like me and like, everything else that was going on. That was way too overwhelming for me to be at.

117 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:15:36 --> 00:15:41
Um, most of the time, and I remember.

118 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:15:41 --> 00:15:45
The hardest part for me were like, the.

119 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:15:45 --> 00:15:56
The time management and executive function of it all to lake actually manage to do my class work.

120 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:15:56 --> 00:16:05
And, like, actually make myself do it because I have autism and ADHD. So it's, it's like.

121 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:16:05 --> 00:16:14
Part of me wants to strictly follow the little schedule that I wrote out. Then the other part of me doesn't want to do it at all. So, um.

122 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:16:14 --> 00:16:20
I would get very easily distracted. I would like hop from 1 thing to another thing. Um.

123 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:16:20 --> 00:16:28
So, kind of learning how to like, self discipline again, um, with like, all of the.

124 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:16:28 --> 00:16:35
Kind of solo education that I had to do. I feel like that kind of prepared me for college a little bit.

125 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:16:35 --> 00:16:40
Um, but, yeah, and then.

126 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:16:40 --> 00:16:45
My last question is what has been your best experience at Iowa state so far.

127 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:16:45 --> 00:16:53
And also like a double added question, how is this class help? You find a sense of community feeling.

128 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:16:53 --> 00:16:57
1 of my best.

129 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:16:57 --> 00:17:01
Kind of experiences here and I was state.

130 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:17:01 --> 00:17:14
Was oh, that's a hard 1 actually. Um, um, kind of figuring out which major I wanted to be in, because I started out as a.

131 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:17:14 --> 00:17:17
Biochemistry major, um.

132 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:17:17 --> 00:17:21
But there were a lot of like, really big lecture halls and, um.

133 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:17:21 --> 00:17:25
Kind of a lot of stuff that would hinder me.

134 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:17:25 --> 00:17:36
Most of the time, um, and I just realized it wasn't something that I wanted to be doing. Um, ever since I was little, I had like, a little fascination with bones.

135 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:17:36 --> 00:17:46
So, I ended up choosing to be with apologized so that I could study bones.

136 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:17:46 --> 00:17:57
Cool. And then lastly about this class, do you feel like it helped you found a community within who you are, and just general acceptance.

137 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:17:57 --> 00:18:03
I feel like it honestly did I haven't been able to like.

138 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:18:03 --> 00:18:10
Say, the things that I have said in this class, like, ever before.

139 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:18:10 --> 00:18:14
And it's like, I feel like.

140 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:18:14 --> 00:18:24
People are finally seeing a little piece of me that I never really wanted or, like, could show other people. So it's definitely.

141 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:18:24 --> 00:18:37
Something different I've seen, like, mixed reactions to me as a person before but like, now it's like, the only reaction I've been getting is, like, support.

142 "Amanda Zarazua" (733272064)
00:18:37 --> 00:18:45
So, I really, really love that. Um, yeah. Okay.

143 "Annalyce Boyd" (590238464)
00:18:45 --> 00:18:49
And that's all that I had for you today.

\\
text/plain
https://iastate.aviaryplatform.com/collections/2981/collection_resources/135077/file/250076#t=0.0,1070.32"}]}]}]}
