Another in the series of programs designed to take you behind the scenes of the many activities at Iowa State College. Today we visit the Iowa State College Library. And here is Mr. Robert Orr, the director of the library. ROBERT ORR: Before we take up the matter of the library and what it does, I'd like to review a little history for a moment. First, let's take a look at the history of an animal. Now let's take a look at the history of a man. It's apparent that animals multiply and so does man. But man is different from an animal in that he also changes. He develops. Why? Because he has a capacity to learn from the experience of his predecessors. And how does man learn from his predecessors? There are many ways. \r\n\r\nHe may learn by looking at the works of those who came before him. He may learn by listening to ballads and stories repeated from generation to generation. But most important of all, man learns from recorded thought in scrolls, newspapers, pamphlets, periodicals, books. Millions of them. As man began to write more and more books, he, of necessity, invented libraries. If he hadn't done so, books would have been lost, scattered about, left unread. So you see, a library is a collector and guardian, cataloger and purveyor of books. Sounds routine and uninteresting, doesn't it? But let's take a look at what some of the people who have used the Iowa State College Library have to say. They know its value from personal experience. Doctor Henry Gilman, distinguished scientist and member of the Department of Chemistry, has this to say. When you think of research chemist, you probably picture a man working in a laboratory. Actually, you ought to imagine him as working in the stacks of the library, because that is where most of his preliminary work has to be done. Before a chemist begins any laboratory operations on his problem, it is his business to know everything that other chemists have done on similar problems. He wants to be able to find a record of all earlier work that may help him, whether it was published in 1842 or 1952. There are now more than 5000 journals in which chemical research is published. More than 50,000 articles or books in this field are printed each year. \r\nThe chemist has to extract the information he wants from this mountain of published material. It is difficult to carry out research in a laboratory that lacks modern equipment, but it is impossible even to plan research without an up to date library. Now let's see what doctor C.H. Matterson, head of the Department of History and Government, has to say. There has probably never been a time when the library was as indispensable as it is today. In our time, we have fought two and may have to fight a third World war in defense of western civilization. Western civilization is a broad term and difficult to define precisely. For that reason, its definition and story cannot be contained in any one book, or even 2 or 3. It involves ideas of freedom of speech, press, religion, association of human dignity, and the worth of the individual, and has implicit in it that man does not live by bread alone. \r\n\r\nIt is in the library that the story of the establishment of these ideas through centuries of trial, error, and actual conflict can be found. It is there that one can acquaint himself with what the men, not only of today or yesterday, but of yesteryear, thought and did about these ideas, and can see that they were not the results of any one man's thoughts or actions. It is in the library that one can acquire a firsthand acquaintance with the works of Locke, Jefferson, Madison, Abraham Lincoln, or Thomas Aquinas, or Martin Luther. There are too, one may discover, what such often mentioned, but seldom read documents as the Magna Carta, the Bill of rights, the US Constitution, or the Emancipation Proclamation actually said. In short, the library is a preserver of the skeleton of the western way of life, which, if it is not known and understood, it will surely be poorly defended. \r\n\r\nWe are happy to have these statements from staff members, and we hope that other staff members view the library as equally indispensable. Now let's take a brief tour of the library. Here is the reserve book reading room. As a rule, this is where the undergraduate student has his first contact with the library. Faculty members, knowing that a reasoned judgment is dependent upon being exposed to more than one man's point of view, make a point of sending students here to supplement their texts and lecture notes with a variety of points of view. Everybody on the campus uses the periodical room. Some come to this room to explore particular hobbies or interests. Some come to read from among the thousand newspapers and magazines on its racks and shelves. And others like this girl, used the periodicals to keep abreast of current developments in their particular field of study. \r\n\r\nMore people come in contact with the library at the circulation desk than at any other point. Ask this librarian for any one of the nearly half a million volumes which the library has in its stacks, and she'll produce that book or tell you where it can be found. The information desk is just what its name implies. Information is obtainable here as to what books are in the library, and help in finding books is also available to this desk also come. The letters come to this desk with questions from Boone, Marshalltown, the University of Southern California, and from institutions as far away as the University of New Zealand.
