When these stories are told, they are typically told from the perspective of Whiteness, continuing to silence these communities. This pattern holds true at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) like Iowa State University, where discussions of racial and ethnic diversity in Iowa State's history typically focus on Jack Trice and George Washington Carver. Individuals of color at predominantly white institutions face a multitude of obstacles at predominantly white institutions, including Iowa State University. These obstacles include feelings of isolation, a lack of mentorship, devaluing of minority-centered research, among others. Communities of color (such as organizations and culture centers) provide spaces for students, faculty, and staff of color to build relationships, network, gain mentors, and provide an outlet for race-based frustrations. These communities are central to improving the quality of life for many racial and ethnic minorities at PWIs. This project seeks to document, preserve, and share the history of racial and ethnic diversity at Iowa State University through the lens of communities of color, inserting these stories into Iowa State's historical narrative and archival record. At one point fifty five p.m. and the garden is a garden Dean Jardine ski the building and I am interviewing Dr. Brenda Thorbs-Weber. So and I'm Patrina Jackson and we'll just get right started. OK. So our first question is when and what brought you to Iowa State. My name is Dr. Brenda Thorbs-Weber Hello everyone. I came to Iowa to central Iowa Ames in the early nineteen eighties I came to obtain a master's degree to graduate degree and I decided I decided to stay on for PGD. So what is your current position and duties at the university. Well currently I'm in the position of academic advisor and I serve as the multicultural liaison officer for the Ivy College of Business in the Jardine building and my duties are to work with undergraduate students to help them with registration making sure they graduate helping them with leadership opportunities and being a success here at Iowa State. Excellent. What was your experience of the environment or climate for black students faculty and staff at the University when you arrived. Wow you're asking me to go back in time. It was at times harsh at times I think there was more of a community back in the day because there were so few of us and we truly when we get together it was a joy to go to a party at the Black Culture Center on a weekend when an African student group was given a party or the Caribbean club was given a party. We came together for that seems as if as we were getting more people of color names people appear to be less friendlier. People don't seem to want to speak to you but back then there were not many people many of us. As I recall graduate students at that time came from the south. I'm originally from North Carolina. And the recruiter Mr Ramsey who worked in a graduate college who was originally from North Carolina was for me with the South so he recruited a lot of the graduate students from there and so my community became that community of graduate students from across the south and the Midwest. And my church family but the climate. The environment. People like to talk about. About Iowa niceness I found. At times it was not so nice. But at other times people did reach out and were supportive because when I first came there was my intent only to receive a master's degree and it was do my major professor working on a master's degree. Did I even get the idea that I could do a deal. So there are people here that want to help you. Thank you. So in your opinion what is the purpose of the Black faculty and staff association. Well for me personally the reason why I participate in the PFA is a is because it brings community is there to help build community. I saw also that you have a bad developed professional development opportunities for faculty and staff who desire these. We also in the last four or five years have also ventured into the community. We trying to give back a little bit to help families in the Ames community African-American black families and so that appeal to me. And so those are the purposes that the FSA serve for me. Thank you. So please explain specifically your role in the BSA past and present. Well I've always been a member of the BFA as a. I chair a committee called a Community Outreach Committee and this committee is comprised of some amazing beautiful sisters that we come together in on behalf of the BFA as a we select a family that we partner with throughout the year. And that partnership we wanted a relationship. So it's not just Christmas where we purchase gifts. It starts there where we invite them to our holiday party throughout the year. We partner with them and other organizations to provide them with opportunities. And that relationship goes until October November of the next year and then we select a new family we partner with the Ames Community School District working through Dr. Anthony Jones. He helps prevent families I am from that list of families our committee deliberates and we provide recommendations to the be as a membership that is our main event. But we also partner with the AIDS public library and do things they're doing Black History Month. So you've got a segway into the next question which is describe the types of activities you have participated in in the BSA and you talked about the selecting a family to partner with throughout the year and then are there other end the end of your party. Are there other events and activities. Well you know yes the Community Outreach Committee one of the things that we have started is a book club. We will be bringing black faculty and staff along with anyone else who would like to be a part of that group to read a book and have a discussion and talk about the ramifications because even though we may Lee live here names and we may not be living in a big city or other areas where there have been hot topics there are things that are still happening in Iowa that we want to be connected and we want to have a conversation around these issues because our students are facing some of these issues and some of us as professionals we go out into the community or in other parts of the state. So the book selection will focus on a subject matter that concerns people of color or black people specifically. Well in the beginning this is where we're starting. For example the hate you give is will be our first book this year and we will then let the group pick the second book but we're picking the first book we meaning the committee Community Outreach Committee and then from there the second book for the year we'll leave it up to the participants who come to the first book discussion to select a book and the hate you give us by Angie Thomas. Thank you. So the next question is what are the. What is the FSA signature programs or events. What can you count on them doing every year. Well for me. What are the things I think is helpful to two new faculty and staff who are interviewing here and I would state that we have a wonderful welcome committee there provide them with a welcome bag as well as we ask to serve on these committees are they here or do you meet with them when they're visiting so that we can give them a different perspective of perhaps what their cohorts or counterparts that they're interviewing with in their departments. So I think for me that is one of our major programs. We also have the open reception in the beginning of the school year where we tend to have a good turnout of new faculty returning faculty and staff and where people can see who's around campus because folks get so busy in their different colleges or programs is sometimes hard to get them involved. And so but we do have a good turnout typically for the reception in the beginning of the year. So what role does B FSA play and I assume black community on campus and beyond. Well again I think we provide a place for people to come and I'm waiting to see like minded faces to prove how professional development opportunities this year to be as a head. When they met in their monthly meetings they sometimes hear speakers presentations their most recent one was on advancement and promotion at the university. So for staff looking for opportunities to advance we provided that as a program for faculty and staff. So I think that is one of the ways that we'll continue to evolve socially. People want a community because there is no defined community really in aims like some place. So it's important that we work with partner with other organizations such as the local in ACP to provide programs in the community Mm hmm mm hmm. What do you think are the greatest accomplishments of the FSA I would say face similar to some of the things that we already presented. As far as I know we're the only affinity council or group here I would state that have adopted a family in Ames where we're building relationships with that family with therefore for them. They need help throughout the year. And as far as I know that is where their own it is doing that at this time. We also partnered with like I say things public library in C P. We have gone beyond campus to let the Ames community know that we are a viable group here at Iowa State and available to help serve our community in a way that we might can do that. OK so what do you think are the greatest challenges. Well resources human resources as well as financial. There are a lot of people of color likes that work on campus and it's relative. When I say blacks but there are people in different pockets of the university but for whatever reason they're not involved. I don't know if it's because they don't think they need it in this environment or they're too busy but we really need their assignment their energy to have those of us who've been trying to carry the organization for years. We need new blood. So the challenge is getting people involved consistently and and continually because it's good to come to the reception. But we really need you there to give us ideas on new programs. Is this the direction you want and resources. For example what we do for the family that we partner with each year it is because of the kindness the compassion of the members. We have no budget for this. So we're counting on faculty and staff to bad families who may not would not receive gifts at Christmas to help pay for gifts. We also rely on faculties staff to help pay for aquatic or swim paths for a family for this family in the spring. So I would say resources financial resources as well as human capital. So what role do you think the FSA will play for Black faculty and staff in the future. Well I hope that we will continue to be here. Again though the vitality is dependent upon people who get involved. I just want to do a shout out for our brothers. We really need our black men to get involve so many times the organization. Is carried by women but we really need our men also involved at the planning stage at the working stage to make sure that this is here that this institution is here. For others who will come after us and for others who are here now even though yet another person may not need this. We still need you here involved so that it can be here for others that are coming on board in the final question is do you have any anything else you'd like to add about the FSA will again be FSA has evolved.
