Patty, can you tell me when you were born? I was born March twenty third nineteen fifty seven in Marshalltown, Iowa. Were you raised on a farm or right in town? I was raised on a farm. Can you describe a little bit about what it was like to grow up in a farm in late nineteen fifties? Um, I was the second of six children. My parents were both of Czech descent. I guess I learned early on that, you know, we all worked hard in the family farm. How many brothers and sisters did you have then? I had three brothers and two other sisters. What were their names? Just their first names. And maybe you could spell your last name. I was. I was born Patricia. And who shot at you? Etcetc. And I have an older brother. His name is Gérald and I was second. I have my sister Nancy. She was next to mine then I had twin brothers and they were next. And then I had to strigoi sister that came along about 10 years later after I was born. And her name was Becky. Did your mother work off the farm or was she did she spend all of her time on the farm when we were growing up? She spent all of her time on the farm. She always had a huge garden. She always raised chickens, ducks. You always helped with the kids. Most of her most of her job was raising the kids. Can you remember anything specifically about she you said you all worked hard. Did she encourage you to go to college? Did she encourage you to go to high school? Did you have any ambitions beyond the life of a farm on a farm? I guess it's kind of funny because when we were growing up, we never considered not going to school, not going on to college. I mean, it was something that they always recommended. We didn't have to. It was just something it was totally up to us. Did you like school? Um, yes and no. I had I had my favorite subjects and I had my. What was your favorite subject in school? I really only had one favorite subject, and that was physical education. I, I just excelled in it. I was always good in in all the sports that came with the class. I had other academic classes that I enjoyed, but science was a good class for me and English was a good class for me. That physical education. I looked forward to that every day. Did you go to school right in Marshalltown or did you have a country school? No, I grew up in Toledo and we had school. Well, as a matter of fact, we were sent to the parochial school in Tima, which was a private Catholic school. I guess I'm a little mixed up. You were born in Marshalltown by the hospital. At the hospital. But your farm was closer to Toledo. Yeah, right outside Toledo. And you went to school a little bit in Toledo, but mostly at the Catholic school. We went to school from grades one through six at the parochial school antima St Pat's parochial school. And was St. Pat's all bohemian. There was a good share of Czechoslovakia and dissent, but a lot of the kids walk to school. A lot of the kids were right there within walking distance of the school. A lot of us were just drove in by our parents and I'd say probably 20 percent of us were of Czechoslovakia. And I know that there's an Indian reservation in Tamai County. Were there other Native Americans at same Pat's? I know there wasn't at St Pat's. It was mainly white. Was there any sense of difference or hostility between the Native Americans and the children at St. Pat's? The way children are, you know, they have little rivalries and pick up things from their parents that they probably haven't tested, but they'll still repeat. Do you remember anything about them? Only when I got to the middle school, when I was in junior high, that's when junior high, a public school junior high was a public school. And did the Native Americans attend with white children? Yes, they did. You say that there was not a lot of Native Americans, but there was probably 15 percent Native Americans at that time. And what kind of forms would that kind of discrimination or hurt or kind of harassment? Um, actually, with sixth and seventh grades, I became pretty close with some Native Americans, but I don't know what it was a turning point in eighth grade or ninth grade. It just seems that there was more violence. The the girls just become more pushy, just just not friendly like they had been when they were in the younger years with that sort of hard to deal with. I mean, as a young person without much direction or supervision from adults. Oh, yes. Oh, yes. Because, you know, here you thought you had some good friends in another culture and all of a sudden they turned on you. It was it was hard. It was hard. And then it would have been wouldn't you have been on the same sports teams and things? Yes, I was. I was involved in basketball and track. And these these girls were also involved, you know, the same sports. Now, if you were involved in sports with them, they were fine. You know, you can get along just fine. But, you know, if you met someone in the hallway and they weren't in in the sports that you were in, then they just didn't want anything to do with you. You know, they just kind of hung with their own little group of Native Americans. Would that have been true, like for dances and, you know, kind of social events that happened at school prom and that kind of thing? Um, I'm not aware. When we were growing up in our family, we we didn't go to a lot of social events. Most events that we ever had were just family events. And I'm wondering if you could describe a typical or let's say a high school day for you when you were in high school. What time would you wake up? When would you do chores? What kind of things would you plan on doing? What kind of clothes might you wear? Um, I guess we probably got up around six o'clock, we didn't have a lot of chores that we did in the morning besides maybe the dishes and we all kind of shared with the dishes people that my brothers, you know, we'd all take turns doing the dishes and we and we always caught the bus. I think the bus stops at like seven thirty to pick us up. Basically, our clothing was was pretty normal like it is today. Jeans, t shirts, something you bought at the store. Oh, yes. Where would you shop for it? Um, my mom would probably get a lot of them at like Penney's or Sears in Marshalltown. There weren't a lot of outlets here in Toledo and Marshalltown was the closest place to to get clothes. And and we ordered through Sears a lot because there was a retail outlet in Tima at the time. So we ordered a lot of our clothes for Sears. And where would you do your grocery shopping? As long as I can remember, it was at a small store in Toledo, which later closed and then Fareway opened up and Fairway's been in Toledo for a long time. Did you can much of the food that you ate? My mom would would freeze corn and she would would freeze green beans. She would canned green beans. She would basically put everything away for the winter. As far as our meat, we would always butcher a couple hogs a year. We also butcher a beef or two. We did our own chickens. We'd raise chickens with our own chickens, ducks, and we had rabbits at home, too. And so we'd also butcher rabbits for me. Wow. And did you as kids help with all of those chores? Um, yes and no. The boys, they pretty much they would help Dad Morsell, but the girls kind of got in on all the butchering and all the the preserving of the food. Would you freeze meat? No. What we. Oh, freezing. Yes. Yes. Once we got it processed we we'd fill up our freezer. So you would send it to a locker. Right. Have it right. Oh so you don't support the pork. We did. And in the beef that we did yet you don't remember skimming off the lard or any of that stuff. No. Did your mom or your grandma have much to do with any of this? Um, when we were young, my grandma do hot check on my mom's side. She'd always come over and she'd help with, uh, butchering chicken. And when I was very young and we had the extended family would just live up the road from each other, my my grandparents, who would live just down the road from my folks. And then I had two uncles that lived right next door to us down the road. And we'd all get together when it was time to make apple cider and we'd all have, you know, a family gathering and we do our apple cider and do our apple. That sounds wonderful. I suppose you might had a lot of cousins up and down the road then. Yes, we did. I had an Uncle Paul and he had seven children. And my Uncle Amole at one time was state senator. He had five children and then our sixth and then my grandparents that lived right next door. I don't think I wrote down your mother and father's name. My father's name is John Warshak and my mom, Darlene. How do you spell the hatcheck? The h a c h e k. Oh, I got it. Was your mother from the neighborhood or had she moved quite a ways to marry John? My mother grew up in real Chelsea and she grew up on a hog and chicken farm. Do you have a sense from what your parents said, that they had any preferences for the kinds of careers you might pursue as adults? Um, I know at one time I was pursuing going into the armed services. I was thinking of the Air Force or the Navy. And my dad was pretty adamant. He says no. He says, I don't want you going into the service. And I don't know if that was because he had been in the service that he didn't want his daughter to be in the service. I get the feeling that if the boys wanted to go in, it would have been OK. But I guess at the time he was thinking that women at that time were were given quite a descriptive name if they were in the armed forces, such as, you know, a whore. And so my dad just kind of told me that he didn't want me going into the service. Wow. And did did he make it sound or was it all right with your family if you went away to Cedar Rapids or to Grinnell or to Iowa State to college, that that wasn't women could do that without losing their reputation. Oh, right. Right. My my folks, they were they were pretty excited when I decided I was going to go to college and I had chosen Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. And they were equally as excited because I had an aunt that had gone to college there and was a nun. Was there any pressure for any of your cousins or yourself to become nuns or priests? Actually, no, there wasn't. But when my aunt came back, like she like she did when we were growing up, she way back then, they they wore the habit of nuns and she would take off her habit and we'd put them on my sister and I, we'd have fun and we'd put them on and and we'd just all sit around and laugh about it. We got pictures of it and we had a lot of fun with it. I bet it was never you know, it was never in the books. They didn't it didn't matter if we were nuns or if we were to be priests or anything. But, you know, I think in the back of their head, they their minds, they would have enjoyed having a nun since I had a great aunt that was a nun. And then my aunt, that is there's something honorable about it and a religious family. So you would go to church pretty regularly then? Oh, yeah. We we would go to church on the holy days. We'd go to church on Saturday nights, Sundays on Saturday nights. Like when you when you could go to mass on Saturday. Yeah. Yeah. And I think they changed that because it had always been like that and I can't remember when they changed it. It just used to be mass on Sunday morning. How could you describe a Saturday night going into town perhaps. I'm not quite sure, even 10 years earlier, farm families usually would go into town once a week and it was Saturday night. Oh, no, we never did. We. That was a time reserved just just for family family night. We basically stayed home. I remember night dancing in the living room with my sisters to Lawrence Welk. And would your cousins ever come over or were they just a little too far down? Um, we did go house to house on Sunday, so that was the day for visiting Sundays with visiting day. So we we'd all go get in the car and we go over to my Uncle Paul's or or we'd go over to my aunt and Uncle Amole. And Dorothy, would you go for a meal or afternoons or play cards or play with the kids out on board games? Actually, we would go in the afternoon and we'd probably have some snacks, but the kids would do you know, the girls would kind of mess around together in the boys. You know, they'd probably go outside and play around if it was nice that, yeah, most of the time was spent Sunday afternoons visiting either aunts and uncles and cousins or after church. On Sundays, we'd stop at our grandparents and we'd sit around till about noon and then go home and eat. You said that in your family that the boys and girls had the same chores in the morning. But I forgot to ask you what your chores would be after you got out of school. At the end of the day, um, we would be involved in chicken chores, rabbit chores. At the time, my dad failed to finish a small, small number of cells and we'd help to feed the cells. And if there was a capped bottle, we'd bottle the Cavs or. Things along that not along that line and Gerald. Gerald. Gerald, Gerald maybe could spell that for me g e r. And he was the only boy did where his. Oh no. He was the oldest boy. The twins, rich and rich and Robert and the boy were their choice different from the girls chores after school. Um, in the spring when my brother was old enough, he, he and my dad would go out into the field and they'd work the field up and he they'd all we'd all pitch in and do the chores when we were quite young. Well, I think all the way through high school, dad would always have a couple of cows that he'd milk for the table and girls and boys would both do that. Actually, my my dad would do that and my brother Gerald would do that. And sometimes I'd get in on some of that, but not as much with it, seen as something that there was just a matter of preference rather than like a gender role. Right. Yeah. I guess whoever did the chores, the one that got there first was the one that actually, you know, got to do it. It didn't matter who did it as long as it was done. Can you think of any ways that I can't you know, ways in which you might have resented what boys got to do or what girls had to do or vice versa? Or maybe you remember your brothers feeling that way about something that you got to do or had to do? Um, the only thing I can recall is wanting to be out in the field. I always was pretty envious of my brothers because they got to go out into the fields and drive the tractors. And I actually wanted to do that. I mean, in the spring and in the summer, we made a lot of hay and we still make a lot of small bales. But, you know, just riding the racks and pulling the hay from the from the baler just wasn't enough because I wanted to drive to. How big was your farm? Um, my dad had probably close to two hundred acres. And how big was the tractor? Um, the tractor was an international and my dad still uses it today. It's an international and they call it an M, but he also has a three hundred and a four hundred and he's got some larger ones now, but he still uses them for small projects. And when you told him that you wanted to drive the tractor, what would he tell you? Oh, he just told me I was too young. I was too small that the boys are doing it. So I. You go help your mom and dad, your mom stand up for you and your dad or Noni with him. Oh, yeah. My mom always agreed with my dad because she needed help in the house too, because my I had a younger sister and she was quite a bit smaller than the rest of us. So she she had the older girls help take care of my my younger sister. So we you know, besides all the work that we did on the farm, we had a lot of spare time to have fun and play outside. And we we did have a good time playing together. How many children were sharing a bedroom that you remember in your home? Um, when I was really young, up until the age of probably five, I shared a bed and a bedroom with my older brother and my younger sister. It a double bed. And then when the the twin boys came along, then the three boys shared one room and then the girls. Well, as to my sister and and I, the two older shared a bedroom. And then when my youngest sister came along, we had to make the laundry room into a bedroom and that was downstairs. We had two bedrooms upstairs and and when two bedrooms down. And so at least two children in a bedroom. Right. Can you remember if there were many books or magazines scattered around the house or was there much reading material where you more likely to have games like board games or cards or something else? Um, there was some reading material, but I don't recall what it was. We always had the local paper. Dad would always take like a Catholic type magazine. We had a lot of board games, but the the most the family's choice was Monopoly. And we always had decks and decks of cards because we played lots of cards, especially in the winter. And it was always peper. The game of choice was Peper. I've never heard of that. I don't know if it's just something around this region or if it's privy to to the Czechoslovakia's, I don't know, but it's just something I grew up with. Would your parents play with the children or was it mostly the kids? Yeah, the parents would play to not all the time. You know, with six kids, we'd have to basically it's a game or four play, so we don't only have to have room for four. And so the other two kids would have to sit out for a while. Well, I probably have forgotten to ask you some things. Are there some other things that you remember about your childhood on the farm? I remember when I was a youngster and we were on Saturday night, one of the things that we would do is it just was a ritual with us. That was bath night. And that night was the youngest to take a bath first. And it would end up with the older kids and we'd all use the same bath water, just one tub for everybody, one tub. I mean, we would we would have to warm it up with more additional hot water. But we were basically in a hurry when we took a bath because we didn't want to waste water, because that was the time when we did conserve. And with water, did it come out of a hot water heater or did you warm it on the stove? No, we had a hot water heater at the time. And I do remember growing up and up until the sixth grade, I was probably 12 years old, that we did have wood heat. We'd have a wood stove in the kitchen and then we'd have another wood stove in the living room. Did your mom do her canning and things on the wood stove then? No, no. She had an electric stove, but for warmth in the wintertime, my dad would burn wood and coal in the wood stoves. Anything else from your childhood that I forgot to mention? I didn't ask much if your parents belonged or your mother belonged to any groups political party activities, a rural township club, American Legion, anything like that. Um, my folks were built. Members are still both members of the Toledo American Legion, and they used to work a lot of fish fries and help out when they could. Dad would be called upon to march in some of the parades or to help during Labor Day or Veteran's Day celebrations. Well, in addition to all of the work that you did on the farm with milking and with chores and the animals, what was the family's attitude about your having a job in addition to that? Um, basically. Unheard of. The kids, the kids there, just enough to do on the farm that no one that I knew had a job. I mean, the cousins, I mean, there was all plenty there was always plenty to do for for all of us. And our summers to in the summers to our grades were important to the folks. And as long as we kept her grades up, you know, that was that was more important than a job. The summers, I guess, when we got older, by the time we reached 13, Pioneer was basically our only option. And so we detasseling for Pioneer. Oh, well. So that so our summers I mean, which only took like two weeks out of the whole summer, but the rest of the time in the summer was spent mowing grass, making hay and, and everything from between chickens and, and all that when I was growing up.
